How Nepal's Exchange Rate Works
Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB), the central bank of Nepal, sets official exchange rates for foreign currencies every business day. Commercial banks, money changers, and remittance companies use these rates as the reference for their transactions. The Nepali Rupee (NPR) is pegged to the Indian Rupee (INR) at a fixed rate of 1 INR = 1.60 NPR, while other currencies float based on international market conditions.
About Nepal Rastra Bank Forex Rates
NRB publishes forex rates for over 20 currencies including USD, EUR, GBP, AUD, CAD, INR, JPY, and several Middle Eastern and Asian currencies. The rates include both buying and selling prices. Banks can set their own rates within the NRB-permitted spread, which means actual rates at banks may vary slightly from the NRB reference rate.
For Nepalis working abroad, especially in Gulf countries, Malaysia, South Korea, and Japan, these rates directly affect the value of their remittance back home. Nepal receives approximately 25% of its GDP from remittances, making exchange rates a topic of national importance.
How Nepal's Foreign Exchange System Works
Nepal's foreign exchange system is anchored by a single critical peg: the Nepali Rupee (NPR) is fixed to the Indian Rupee (INR) at a rate of 1 INR = 1.60 NPR. This peg has been maintained by Nepal Rastra Bank for decades and reflects the deep economic ties between Nepal and India. Because of this arrangement, the NPR does not float independently on global markets – its value against all other currencies is derived from how the Indian Rupee performs against those currencies.
Each business day, NRB calculates cross-rates for over 20 foreign currencies by combining the INR/USD rate on international markets with the fixed 1.6 NPR/INR peg. For example, if the INR/USD rate is 85, then the USD/NPR rate would be approximately 85 × 1.6 = 136. This cross-rate mechanism is how rates for EUR, GBP, AUD, JPY, and all other currencies are determined. Some Gulf currencies like AED, SAR, and QAR are themselves pegged to the USD, creating a chain of fixed rates that makes their NPR conversions highly predictable.
Commercial banks in Nepal are allowed to set their own buy/sell rates within a NRB-regulated spread above and below the reference rate. This means the rate you get at a bank counter may differ slightly from the NRB published rate. Money changers and remittance operators also follow this framework but may offer different spreads depending on competition and the currency corridor. Understanding this system helps explain why rates vary between providers and why tracking the NRB reference rate is the best starting point for any conversion.
