What is Panchanga?
Panchanga (Sanskrit: “five limbs”) is the traditional Hindu almanac that has been used for centuries across Nepal and the Indian subcontinent. It provides five essential daily elements that govern religious observances, auspicious timing, and cultural life: Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga (luni-solar combination), Karana (half-tithi), and Vaara (weekday).
In Nepal, the Panchanga is consulted daily by priests, astrologers, and households alike. Whether planning a wedding, performing a puja, starting a new business, or observing a fast, the Panchanga guides millions of people in choosing the most auspicious moment for their activities.
The Five Elements of Panchanga
Tithi is the lunar day, defined by the 12-degree angular separation between the Sun and Moon. There are 30 tithis in a lunar month, split into the bright half (Shukla Paksha) and dark half (Krishna Paksha). Specific tithis are associated with particular deities and are considered ideal for different types of worship and activity.
Nakshatra refers to the 27 lunar mansions through which the Moon travels during a sidereal month. Each nakshatra spans 13°20′ of the zodiac and carries unique qualities that influence the day's energy and suitability for various undertakings.
Yoga is determined by adding the longitudes of the Sun and Moon and dividing by 13°20′. There are 27 yogas, each with its own character ranging from highly auspicious (like Siddhi and Amrita) to inauspicious (like Vyaghata and Vajra).
Karana is a half-tithi — each tithi consists of two karanas. There are 11 karanas in total, with some being fixed and others recurring. Karanas help fine-tune the auspiciousness of a specific half-day period.
Vaara is simply the day of the week. In the Hindu system, each day is associated with a celestial body and a presiding deity, making certain days more suitable for specific activities.
How is this Panchanga Calculated?
This Panchanga is computed using the Swiss Ephemeris, a high-precision astronomical calculation library used worldwide for astrological and calendrical computations. All calculations are performed for Kathmandu, Nepal (27.7172°N, 85.3240°E) at Nepal Standard Time (UTC+5:45), ensuring accuracy for users across Nepal.
The data updates daily and includes precise sunrise and sunset times, tithi progress, nakshatra transit, yoga, and karana for the current day. Moon phase information is also provided to help with lunar observances.
