About Romanized Nepali Typing

Romanized Nepali typing (also called phonetic typing) allows you to type Nepali using standard English keyboard keys. Each English letter or combination maps to a Nepali Devanagari character. This method is intuitive for people who are familiar with both English and Nepali, as you simply type how the word sounds.

This tool supports common romanization patterns including consonant clusters, vowel marks, and Nepali numerals. The mapping reference table above the typing area shows the most common character mappings for quick reference.

Nepali Typing Methods Explained

There are three main methods for typing Nepali on a computer. The first is Romanized (phonetic) typing, which is the method used by this tool. You type English letters that sound like the Nepali word, and the tool converts them to Devanagari in real time. For example, typing "nepal" produces "नेपाल". This is the easiest method for anyone who already knows the English keyboard layout.

The second method is the traditional Nepali keyboard layout (also called the Romanized keyboard layout defined by the Nepal government). This maps Devanagari characters to specific keys on the keyboard and requires memorizing the layout. It is commonly used in government offices and by professional typists. The third method involves font-based typing using Preeti, Kantipur, or similar fonts, where you type English characters that display as Nepali when the correct font is applied. This older method is being phased out in favor of Unicode.
